Carell shows up to Good Hang to gently correct the character people project onto him, the guy who waved at a tour bus in Beverly Hills, got no wave back, and swore off public spontaneity forever. With Stephen Colbert as the warmup act and Amy Poehler hosting, the episode is sharpest when both stop being charming and get technical, agreeing that the joy of failing onstage with another person is the actual training, not a consolation prize. His cleanest idea is a two-sentence theory of comedy: the character cannot know they are in one, and the moment they do it gets less funny. He proves it in reverse with his read on Michael Scott slipping out the day before his own farewell party, a man finally beyond needing to be celebrated that way.
