That is the claim that sticks, because it turns AI data centers from a vague tech concern into something brutally domestic. Not “the grid.” Not “the future of compute.” The kitchen sink. The well. The monthly bill on the counter.

But the clip never gives the crucial unit: per day, per month, per year, per facility cycle? Without that, the number is a siren with the label scratched off.

Still, Brockovich is not freelancing some sci-fi panic. Data centers do need enormous power, and many cooling systems require water. AI has made the whole problem louder because the compute appetite is bigger, hotter, and more constant. The public debate often treats these buildings like a cloud with a zoning permit. Brockovich’s useful move is to drag them back to earth, where they sit on land, near aquifers, next to neighborhoods, plugged into aging municipal systems.

Her least defensible flourish is the scale creep. She says data centers are “going to use more water than the world would consume,” which is the kind of line that makes engineers reach for a red pen. But the better version of her argument doesn’t need that. The better version is local and mean: in a drought-stressed place, one thirsty industrial neighbor can change the math for everyone around it.

Brockovich’s whole public identity was forged in contaminated water, specifically the Pacific Gas and Electric fight in Hinkley, California. So when she hears residents say their wells are sputtering, their water is brown, their bills are exploding, and nobody in power is moving fast enough, she knows the genre. It’s not subtle. It’s also not nothing.

And are there any regulations to look at what chemicals are or aren’t in that water before we release it into the environment and down into the drains and just create another pollution issue.

Her argument widens from water scarcity to waste. Closed cooling systems, she says, still need chemicals, and those systems eventually need to be cleaned. She claims whistleblowers have told her contaminated water is being sent into sewers with no real oversight. That’s the line a reporter should chase first, not because it’s automatically true, but because it’s testable. If a data center is loud enough, thirsty enough, and disruptive enough to show up in wells, bills, animals, and sleep patterns, then the AI boom has a neighbor problem. Not a branding problem. A neighbor problem.
