Hunter Biden says the White House cocaine wasn't his because he hadn't been there for weeks and was being drug-tested

The great internet syllogism of 2023 was brutally simple: cocaine in the White House, Hunter Biden once smoked crack, case closed, cue the meme printer. Hunter Biden says that story is wrong, and on Modern Wisdom he answered it with the energy of a man who has spent two years mentally annotating a West Wing floor plan.

His claim: the cocaine wasn’t his because it was found in cubbies near the West Wing entrance used by staff and visitors, not on the route he says Secret Service used to bring him into the residence. He also said he hadn’t been in the building for about a month to six weeks when the bag was found, and that he was being drug-tested by federal probation two or three times a week.

This is the ideal Hunter Biden denial, part legal brief, part uncle at Thanksgiving commandeering Google Maps. He walks the hosts through the residence, the West Wing, the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, the Situation Room, the cubbies, the cafeteria where somebody apparently gets soup. It is both absurd and useful. The cocaine story became a morality play because nobody needed geography for the joke. Hunter brought geography anyway.

The denial is not airtight, but it is annoyingly specific

The Secret Service closed its investigation into the White House cocaine without publicly identifying who left it. That means Biden can’t prove a negative here. But he can make the dumbest version of the accusation harder to repeat without sounding like a guy yelling at a cloud shaped like Sean Hannity.

The details matter. He says he entered through the South Lawn and went up to the residence under Secret Service protection. He says the bag was found by the route used by administration traffic. He says he wasn’t there when it was found, and not just by a weekend. By his telling, the timeline is off by weeks.

I haven’t been in the White House for 6 weeks to a month when it’s found.

That line is the hinge. If true, it turns the White House cocaine saga from a smoking pipe into a stray bag in a heavily trafficked federal building. Still embarrassing. Still weird. Still tailor-made for late-night monologues. But not automatically Hunter’s.

The real defense is humiliation

What makes Biden effective here, and sometimes maddening, is that he has almost no shame left to weaponize against him. He talks about the laptop, sex tapes, crack, prostitutes, relapse, and addiction with the flat exhaustion of someone whose worst material has already been screen-grabbed by the Daily Mail. His argument is not, I would never. His argument is, I have admitted to much worse, why would I draw the line at this tiny bag?

That is not sainthood. It is strategy. Biden has learned that the only way out of being the internet’s favorite cautionary tale is to over-answer. He gives the hosts the sordid stuff, then the procedural stuff, then the recovery stuff. It can feel rehearsed, because of course it is. If you had been the third-most-discussed person on Fox News behind your father and Donald Trump, you would have bullet points too.

There is also a grim comedy in the fact that the hosts had apparently speculated about the cocaine before, and Biden came prepared like a defendant who brought exhibits. The room wants the joke. He gives them the joke, then makes them look at the building diagram.

The best verdict is this: Biden’s explanation does not solve the mystery, but it beats the meme. The meme was never evidence. It was vibes with a powdery residue.

And if his drug-testing claim is accurate, the logistics get even less convenient for the internet’s favorite answer.
