WATCH NOW↓ Volodymyr Zelenskyy does not buy Donald Trump’s diesel story. On The Diary of a CEO, the Ukrainian president says Trump is falsely blaming Ukraine’s strikes on Russian energy infrastructure for U.S. diesel prices, when the real problem is that Trump cannot get Vladimir Putin to accept an energy ceasefire.
That is the live wire here, not just another wartime plea from Volodymyr Zelenskyy for weapons and patience. Trump, in a clip played to Zelenskyy, claims he told Ukraine not to hit Russian refineries because American farmers and ranchers would feel the pain. Zelenskyy’s answer is basically: nice try, but wrong villain.
Zelenskyy torches the diesel excuse
No. Um first of all, uh diesel exports have no impact. The volume of diesel exports is so negligible uh from Russia that it has zero impact on prices in the United States of America. That is totally false information.
As economics, the word zero is a little too clean. Diesel is a global market, and markets do annoying market things, like reacting to fear, headlines, refinery disruptions, shipping chokepoints, and whatever fresh chaos is blooming near the Strait of Hormuz. But Zelenskyy is right about the political shape of the argument. Trump’s version makes Ukraine the cause of American pain and leaves Putin as a weather event.
Zelenskyy’s counterclaim is simpler: Russia hits Ukraine’s electricity, Ukraine hits Russia’s oil money. Kyiv is not randomly choosing refineries because it has a hobby. It is retaliating against the infrastructure that funds Russian weapons while asking for a narrower deal that would spare civilians from blackouts.
But President Trump can’t reach an agreement with Putin on this. Putin refuses him an energy ceasefire. And so the president decided to pin this problem not on Putin, but on me.
That is the cleanest accusation in the whole exchange: Trump is not just wrong on energy prices, Zelenskyy says, he is misassigning blame. And for a president trying to hold together support for the Russia-Ukraine War, blame is not a side issue. It is ammunition.
The real ask is Patriots, not sympathy
Zelenskyy then turns the diesel fight into a weapons request, which is very much the Zelenskyy house style: moral outrage, followed by logistics. If Washington wants Ukraine to stop striking Russian energy sites, he says, then give Ukraine the tools to stop Russian attacks first.
So I said, okay. you can’t force Putin to stop the war and make an energy truce, give me air defense missiles. I won’t fire at anyone. I’ll protect our energy sector.
This is where the complaint gets harder to wave away as theater. Zelenskyy says the missiles are not even being requested for free, with Europeans prepared to fund them. His argument is not that America owes Ukraine an open tab. It is that Washington is willing to send Patriot missiles elsewhere, cut understandings with Moscow over diesel, and then ask Ukraine to absorb Russian attacks without answering back. That is not a strategy. That is a parent telling one child to stop crying because the other child is holding scissors.
The line Zelenskyy wants Trump to say to Putin
Asked if there is a realistic path to ending the war, Zelenskyy does not reach for poetry. He reaches for pressure. Sanctions, rhetoric, the table. In his telling, Donald Trump already knows how to talk tough. He is just pointing the tough talk in the wrong direction.
Trump can bring Putin to the negotiating table very easily. Because he needs to the way he talks about me, President Trump, he needs to adopt that kind of rhetoric about Putin.
That is Zelenskyy’s case in miniature. If Trump can threaten Kyiv over diesel, he can threaten Moscow over the war. If he can make Ukraine the problem, he can make Putin the problem. The next question is the one Zelenskyy leaves hanging over the whole appearance: why won’t he?
- What exactly did Zelenskyy say Trump got wrong about diesel?
- Zelenskyy said Russian diesel exports have no meaningful effect on prices in the United States and called Trump’s claim totally false. He argued Ukraine strikes Russian energy infrastructure only in response to Russia attacking Ukraine’s power grid.
- Why does Zelenskyy think Trump is blaming Ukraine?
- His answer is that Trump has not been able to make Putin accept an energy ceasefire, so the pressure gets redirected toward Kyiv. Zelenskyy frames it as a dodge: Putin keeps attacking Ukraine’s energy system, Ukraine retaliates, then Ukraine gets scolded for the fuel politics.
- What does Zelenskyy want from the United States instead?
- He says if Trump wants Ukraine to stop hitting Russian energy targets, the United States should provide air defense missiles so Ukraine can protect its own power grid. Zelenskyy stresses that Europe is ready to fund the weapons, making the refusal sound less like a budget problem than a political choice.
